On April 20â4/20, the stoner equivalent of St. Patrickâs Dayâ-Jason skipped school to get baked out of his melon. The rest of us showed up for class, only to have the bubble of safety at school popped by the news that two guys in Colorado had gone off the deep end and shot up their high school. Word spread quickly about what had happened at Columbine, and by the end of the day the mood in my schoolâs hallways shifted noticeably Columbine became an ominous shadow that hung over school, and none of us really knew what to do with ourselves. Things were funeral-quiet for the rest of the day. Our world had suddenly become so much more dangerous, despite the distance between Massachusetts and Colorado. It was emotionally close, aesthetically close. The hallways of Columbine High were Tritonâs hallways. The Columbine shooters, with their trench coats and musical tastes, were just like kids we all knew. No fingers were pointed, none that I knew of, at least, but I can only imagine that some of my classmates started suspecting that others might actually snap. The line between fact and fiction seemed blurred. It was a scary time to be a kid.
We mourned together, feeling the evil presence that had forced its way into our collective hearts and minds. For me, school was a scary place to begin with, a place where you were judged in a glance and were torn apart with words. But not bullets. Suddenly junior highâs caste system no longer mattered. There were bigger things out there than name-calling and being the weirdo.
That next day Jason didnât quite know what the hushed doom and gloom was about.
âJeez, whatâd I miss?â
âDidnât you hear?â I asked him.
âAbout what?â
âAbout the shooting? The high school in Colorado?â
The only thing he had watched on TV the day before was Teletubbies , through smoky, bloodshot eyes.
âShit,â he said. My brief summary of the shooting had killed whatever was left of his 4/20 buzz. I realized at that moment that of all the things to pretend to be, I had chosen to pretend to be a fourteen-year-old burnout, and I couldnât do it anymore. The days of me and Jason seemed like they were about to be cashed.
